What do you get?

KR Multicase are a fairly household name when it comes to miniature storage cases. Indeed I have a couple of their cases for my own collections. However the ones I own are their card carry cases, so I was keen to take a look at these alternative aluminium cases.

Here we have a standard sized aluminium KR Multicase. The case its self is 40cm x 28cm and 14cm deep. The cases are produced in two colours, silver as shown or black panels with silver trim. The case is lined with a sturdy black felt. The overall feel of the case (general construction, hinges, handle, locks etc.) is reassuringly sturdy.

The case is fairly lightweight, which surprised me since I had avoided buying metal cases in the past thinking they would be unwieldy and heavy. Since I would likely fill it with metal figures starting off with a heavy case when empty would not be ideal. The case comes with a handy shoulder strap making transport easier.

This particular case came with a set of foam trays specifically designed for Games Workshop Space Marine miniatures. Probably a wise move to cater for a large part of those into miniature gaming. The foam trays also helped to show the variety and versatility of the trays KR Multicase produce. The foam trays supplied mean you can carry (for those familiar with Space Marine forces) 2 Drop Pods, 2 Rhinos, 1 Predator and 40 troops.

We can see here removal of the foam insert for the drop pod. Clearly a large model, which as I mentioned shows the customisation potential of tray offered by KR Multicase (and that they clearly know the market requirements). By contrast a standard set of trays for this case (4 trays) would mean you could carry up to 160 miniatures.

KR Multicase can clearly deal with the type of miniatures you may need storing and or transporting with their range of foam tray inserts. However the acid test for me is how suitable the foam trays are for my miniatures. You can see from the picture I have some of those miniatures never destined to fit nicely in regular shaped trays! I could and have gone for trays with larger compartments but that reduces the overall capacity of the case. But as you can see from my test, I was able to push the miniature flat and have the foam give way rather than bend the miniature. The foam is rigid enough to form a barrier between compartments but also allows for a lot of over hanging weapons.

The final word.

Would I buy a KR Aluminium case for my miniatures. Yes I would, but I think from a transport point of view. The KR Multicase website has some video's of the cases being dropped from a moving vehicle and since I often strap my miniature cases to the back of the bike to get down to my gaming club, the aluminium version would probably prove more useful than the card ones I currently own. Expense wise I'd probably stick to multiples of the card ones for storage and the aluminium case for taking that days gaming miniatures. Overall a good solid product with a goood range of foam tray inserts available, and as demonstrated good quality foam to round off the package.
