How does it play?

Lady Wintermore's Fangs is a scenario box for the fantasy Napoleonic games Flintloque, now in it's third edition.
This boxed set dates back to 1997 and rules cover the second edition, however Alternative Armies will graciously provide an update sheet to bring the game up to date with the current edition if requested. The boxed set covers three scenarios covering the escape of General Simon d'Aldrondt from the city of Moskova as the undead servants of the Star Wraith Aleksander rise under the power of the Blood Moon and lie siege to the invader Mordred's army. It's more or less a more fantasy laden reenactment of Napoleon's campaign into Russia leading up to the burning of Moscow under orders of Count Feodor Vasilievich Rostopchin. Flintloque is mostly a poke in the eye at warfare during the Napoleonic era. A cast of elves, dwarves, anthropomorphic dogs and toads among other races round out a colorful rogue's gallery that makes up the setting for Flintloque.
The book itself begins with the characters type and experience levels of the characters central to the scenarios. This is followed by some introductory stories to capture the flavor of what the scenarios entail. Overall it's three balanced scenarios with a careful eye for balance and a bit of introductory story given before the scenario objectives for each group are given out. The downside is that for a skirmish game the maps for the scenarios are a little bit beyond elaborate. The first scenario taking place in the Wintermore house is decidedly large. At the time we just drew the house out on a dry erase sheet which is functional but really lacks that eye popping appeal. Since then I might suggest using Worldworks Games Shellendrak Manor to recreate the house. The second and third scenarios take place on the streets, running wild with flames and collapsing buildings. The suggestions in the book show a good half dozen buildings for the second scenario and around two dozen for the third, no small undertaking if starting from scratch to be certain. It's a lot of work set up to get these scenarios ready and probably the only real downside to the set. This can be skimped or modified easily, it's just worth a mention that the suggested tabletops are a bit daunting in scope.
The scenarios are, when boiled down, a series of three escape scenarios for the elf forces as the undead player attempts to stymie and weaken the group as each scenario progresses. It forces the elven player to keep moving and provides a good stick and carrot maotivator to keep the scenarios fluid and not becoming a stand and fight type of game, which the combined forces of the Moskovian undead could probably overwhlem the elf forces. Zombies are of the slow variety but tend to be hard to put down once and for all. A common frustration among Flintloque players is that the undead tend to be a bit stiff and horrid shots but require several shots to be put to final rest, it's a nice touch to the usual disposable zombies often seen in wargames these days.

The figures themselves are typical of the Flintloque style which is something you either find characterful or as some describe them, crude. These are sculpts that date back to 1997 so they're a bit on the aged side but I still found them a pleasure to paint although I preferred the personalities in the Deadloque boxed set a bit better, but I'll cover that set at a later date. Madame Boniface, the animated skeleton in fancy dress half hiding her face behind a mask in probably the pick of the bunch while Igor the golem is a bit bland in representation and sculpting. It's rather a mixed bag but comes down to a person either liking the style of Flintloque minis or not.
Flintloque is in it's third edition now with the basic book, The War in Catalucia, Death in the Snow, and Grapeshotte, the newest book just released, available. If curious to give the game a spin with no investment Alternative Armies will email anyone interested a free lite rules set pdf. Details are at: Alternative Armies
